1. TASTE the cake before you buy. You don't want your wedding to be remembered for the wrong reasons !
2. Get recommendations from family, friends, workmates, or good local hotels.
3. Plan ahead. Many suppliers of wedding services have limited capacity, so if you want to make sure that you get the cake (or cars, or hotel, or vicar!) of your dreams, book as far ahead as you can.
4. If you can manage it, try to visit the premises before you commit yourself. Premises and facilities can give a good indication of the quality of the end result.
5. Remember that the cake needs to look good for your photos, so a design that complements the overall theme of your wedding will work best.
6. Order the correct size of cake for you and your guests- a typical three tier round cake (with 6+8+10 inch tiers) should provide around 160 portions. A three-tier square cake (again 6+8+10") provides around 200 portions.
7. Be aware that cakes (like all foodstuffs) have a limited lifespan. For example, the oils in marzipan can become rancid after a few months, and sponge cakes will go off in a week or two. Don't hoard it- Jenny can always make you another one !
